Upcoming events

Music in the Park:

We’re currently scheduling bands to play our Music in the Park events this summer! The program will run Saturday evenings from June to August, and we have room in the program for musicians of all kinds!

Please call 534-0261 to schedule your band or find out more about the events!

Festival of Trees:

Each winter we create a magical winter wonderland at the Festival of Trees. Volunteers decorate live trees which are sold or auctioned to local individuals and businesses. In 2006, we plan to have the event at Penny Park, and again transform our amphitheater into a forest of trees! Planning for this event starts in September, and we’ll be looking for volunteer coordinators to make the event all it can be. We’ll need tree decorators, bakers, tree sales and auction coordinator, raffle coordinator, entertainers and more. Please call the park office to participate!

Earth Day

Each year on the Saturday falling closest to Earth Day Penny Park organizes a seasonal celebration of our park, our community, and our Earth. It is a fun, friendly, family event with information and goods for sale from all kinds of earth-friendly organizations and businesses in our community. There are plants and tie-dye for sale, a potter, reflexologist, the concession stand is open, large bike puppets arrive, and information is available from organizations working on water ecology and conservation, llamas, recycling, trails and open space, gardening and more! There’s also room for entertainers if you’ve got a talent to share with your friends and neighbors.

Our Sponsors in 2006 were: SW Llama Rescue, Evergreen Garden Club, Silver City Food Co-op, Gila Conservation Coalition, Gila Resource Information Project, The Wellness Coalition, Anne Veenstra, Aldo Leopold High School, and the Gila Native Plant Society.

Let's prepare for 2007! We’re always interested in new ideas for the celebration! Registration information will be available in February, 2007.

Penny Drive

This our tenth annual Penny Drive in area elementary schools is a way for elementary school students to directly contribute to the growth and well-being of the park they love. From late February through April, classes gather pennies and other coins in penny cans to contribute to the park. The class in each school that collects the most money wins a pizza party and a gift certificate to Toy Town.

Our goal is to raise $5,000 among the schools and another $5,000 in matching contributions from parents, friends, and local businesses. Year round we collect coins for the Penny Drive in cans located in local businesses. We thank our new volunteers from Life Quest for regularly collecting the coins!

The funds raised from the Penny Drive go to our general operating fund, which pays for our limited staff time, maintenance of the park, and improvements.
